Albany ZIP Coverage
USPS, not a neighborhood map, is the authority for an address-to-ZIP result. The City and County materials document useful Albany groupings, but they do not draw official postal polygons. The table preserves those documented groupings and flags where the research found uncertainty. It is a reading aid for an Albany ZIP code directory, not a claim that every address in a named neighborhood uses one ZIP or that every address with an Albany mailing label lies inside Albany City.
| ZIP | Areas Covered | Post Office | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12201 | City/Albany mailing code appearing in City data and county Sheriff ZIP labels | Not specified in the research | Residential, PO Box, and institutional footprint was not located; verify the address with USPS. |
| 12202 | South End, Mansion Area, Second Avenue, Hudson Park, Lincoln Park | Not specified in the research | City survey grouping; neighborhood labels overlap. |
| 12203 | Washington Park, Upper Washington, Melrose, Campus Area, Dunes; County report calls this State Campus | Not specified in the research | City and County groupings are not identical. |
| 12204 | North Albany, Warehouse District, Shaker-Bishop’s Gate, and Menands | Not specified in the research | Part of the delivery area falls outside the City in the City document. |
| 12205 | Appears in City data and County or Census delivery context | Not specified in the research | City limits do not equal the entire ZIP footprint. |
| 12206 | West Hill, West End, Beverwyck, Upper Washington | Not specified in the research | City survey grouping with overlapping neighborhood names. |
| 12207 | Downtown, Historic Pastures, Mansion Area | Not specified in the research | Central-city grouping; state and civic addresses may use nearby codes. |
| 12208 | Pine Hills, Helderberg, Buckingham Lake; County report calls this New Scotland Avenue | Not specified in the research | Neighborhood edges are local, not postal boundaries. |
| 12209 | Delaware Area, Whitehall, Normanskill, Delso | Not specified in the research | City survey grouping. |
| 12210 | Arbor Hill, Sheridan Hollow, Ten Broeck Triangle, Center Square, Hudson Park | Not specified in the research | Historic and central addresses also use this grouping. |
| 12211 | County health report grouping for Loudonville | Not specified in the research | County or suburban delivery context; do not assume Albany City. |
| 12220, 12222, 12223, 12224, 12226, 12227 | State and civic address codes appearing in City or agency datasets | Not specified in the research | Institutional or government mailing codes, not simple neighborhood ZIPs. |
The City ZIP and neighborhood table is the source for the City groupings. The Albany County health report supplies another set of report groupings, including North Albany/Menands for 12204 and Loudonville for 12211. Neither source replaces the USPS result for a particular address.
Verify an Albany Mailing ZIP
The official USPS ZIP Lookup takes an address, City, and State, then returns a standardized ZIP or ZIP+4. Enter the delivery address as it is used now and save the result date. USPS ZIPs are delivery constructs. They should not be used alone to decide whether an address is in Albany City, in a particular neighborhood, or on a particular parcel.
| Address | Enter the complete street address for postal standardization. |
|---|---|
| City | Use the delivery-city field requested by USPS, then compare it with the parcel municipality. |
| State | Use New York for the Albany-area check. |
| Result | Record the standardized ZIP or ZIP+4 and the date of retrieval. |
The result is the postal part of the record. Next, use a current roll or parcel source to identify the municipality and parcel. The city name in a mailing address can also describe an Albany County town, a state-agency code, a PO Box route, or a neighboring place.
Albany ZIP Neighborhood Groupings
The City table makes the local overlap visible. It pairs 12210 with Arbor Hill, Sheridan Hollow, Ten Broeck Triangle, Center Square, and Hudson Park. It pairs 12208 with Pine Hills, Helderberg, and Buckingham Lake; 12203 with Washington Park, Upper Washington, Melrose, Campus Area, and Dunes; 12202 with South End, Mansion Area, Second Avenue, Hudson Park, and Lincoln Park. Those names are useful for finding the right area in a historical or civic source, yet a neighborhood remains a local identity label rather than a postal designation.
Other groupings work the same way. The City connects 12206 with West Hill, West End, Beverwyck, and Upper Washington; 12209 with Delaware, Whitehall, Normanskill, and Delso; 12207 with Downtown, Historic Pastures, and Mansion; and 12204 with North Albany, Warehouse District, Shaker-Bishop’s Gate, and Menands. Store the ZIP and the neighborhood as separate fields. A record can legitimately carry one without proving the other.
Note: Cite the agency and source date beside any neighborhood grouping because City and County reports use different geographic purposes.
12204 and 12205 City Limits
Albany’s most important postal warning concerns 12204 and 12205. A City document explains that both were omitted from some City-limit analyses because portions sit outside the City. The County report likewise uses a North Albany/Menands grouping for 12204. A ZIP may be a sensible way to narrow a map or check a delivery address, but it cannot establish City jurisdiction by itself. Confirm the parcel municipality before choosing a City or County custodian.
The City’s boundary-analysis document provides the stated caution. For a current place-based check, Search Albany / MapGeo can geocode a property and show civic layers, but its map themes do not make a ZIP boundary a municipal boundary.
Albany Directory ZIP History
ZIP fields have their own date in the historical shelf. APL’s city-directory guide says ZIPs per street begin in 1967. Earlier street guides use other clues: the first street directory dates to 1872, ward numbers appear from 1897 through 1965, house directories begin in 1895H and 1896H and resume in 1914H, and cross streets appear in 1914H. House and street material merged in 1932. That chronology explains why a later ZIP field should never be copied into an earlier directory citation.
When an older address needs neighborhood context, record the street, ward if printed, cross street, and edition year before adding a modern ZIP result. The Albany city directory collections describe the editions and their access routes in detail. Historical directory evidence is time-specific, even when the same building still stands.
PROS Filters Around an Albany ZIP
Albany County PROS is a parcel and property-search route, not a ZIP directory. Its quick search can use an address, tax-map number or SBL, owner name, Street Finder, and municipality. The advanced search adds municipality, neighborhood, street, owner, property class, account, sale date, sale price, square footage, year built, assessed value, house style, bedrooms, bathrooms, condition, basement, and waterfront fields. No dedicated ZIP control was rendered in the inspected interface.
| PROS field | Type | Required | Format or use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Street Address | Text | Optional | Enter number and name, omitting Street, Road, or Lane suffix; several suffixes can match. |
| Tax Map # / SBL | Text | Optional | Parcel or tax-map identifier from a roll or bill. |
| Owner Name | Text | Optional | Current or prior owner search; the portal documents prefix and exact behavior. |
| Street Finder | Dropdown | Optional | Browse all public roads. |
| Municipality | Dropdown | Optional | Choose among Albany County municipalities. |
| ZIP Code | No rendered control | Not applicable | Normalize the address through USPS, then use address and municipality fields. |
PROS is useful after the postal result because it separates a parcel, municipality, street, and owner field. An owner mailing address is not proof of occupancy, and the portal’s current interface does not state a coverage year.
Note: Preserve the PROS search date and the returned municipality because a postal result and a parcel record answer different questions.
Find Albany Residents by ZIP
A ZIP can narrow an address investigation, but Albany does not have a general ZIP-wide resident roster. Start with the delivery result, then make each official search answer a narrower question. PROS can locate a parcel through address, municipality, SBL, or street fields. MapGeo can add parcel geometry and civic themes. The New York voter lookup uses ZIP as one matching field for poll-site, registration, and mail-ballot status when the required identity details match. It is not an unrestricted list.
- Use USPS to standardize the full address and preserve the ZIP or ZIP+4 result date.
- Compare the address with the City and County geographic groupings only as context, not as postal proof.
- Search PROS by address, municipality, SBL, or Street Finder to confirm parcel jurisdiction and a dated property record.
- Use MapGeo for parcel and civic-layer context, recording its data vintage where it matters.
- When a ZIP narrows the search to a particular street, use the Albany street directory for the address-first record trail.
Each result should carry its source, date, and geography label. A parcel source can establish a different fact from a mailing lookup, and neither alone establishes every resident associated with an address.
Albany ZIP Match Limits
The NYS voter lookup requires County, last name, first name, date of birth, and ZIP for a match. Its stated purpose is poll-site, registration, and mail-ballot status. A ZIP there can be a mailing or institutional code, and an apparent match should be recorded only as the portal matching supplied conditions. Historical research is better served by dated directories, assessment rolls, Hall of Records voter material, and newspapers.
The New York Comptroller’s Unclaimed Funds search also accepts City and ZIP after a name, but it is a rightful-claimant workflow rather than a residence source. Its records may involve past addresses, estates, or businesses. The Board of Elections and other custodians also protect restricted or confidential records. Never infer a physical address from a missing or protected result.
Note: A ZIP narrows a query only when the custodian says it does; it does not resolve a same-name match without other dated identifiers.
Albany ZIP Records Geography
ZIP, neighborhood, ward, school district, municipality, and parcel are six separate Albany geographies. The difference matters because a directory may say “Albany, NY” while the property lies outside Albany City, and a central City address can share a grouping with a nearby place or an institutional code. Record the postal result from USPS, the parcel municipality from PROS or a tax roll, the neighborhood label from its agency source, and any ward or civic field with the source date.
- ZIP and ZIP+4
- A ZIP identifies the postal delivery area; USPS can return a more specific ZIP+4 for the entered address.
- PO Box ZIP
- A delivery code used for PO Box or mailing purposes. Its residential footprint must be verified rather than assumed.
- Unique ZIP
- A ZIP associated with a single institutional or government mailing context, such as the state and civic codes documented for Albany.
- Carrier route
- A postal delivery route. It is different from a municipal boundary, neighborhood, ward, or parcel.
This field-by-field approach keeps the Albany ZIP code directory useful without overstating a mailing label. City limits, official neighborhood groupings, and postal delivery boundaries can differ at the same address.
